Many dead after volcano eruption on Java

The Semeru volcano erupted on the Indonesian island of Java on Saturday. The eruption claimed many lives and injuries. The full extent of the natural disaster is still not clear. However, the country’s civil protection agency said hundreds of people had been brought to safety. After the eruption, ash and dust covered large parts of the country. At almost 3,700 meters, the Semeru volcano is also the highest mountain in Java and is located in the east of the most populous island in Indonesia. The volcano had been increasingly active again for around a year. The island nation of Indonesia has around 130 active volcanoes and is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. The Merapi on Java, the Sinabung on Sumatra and the Lewotolo on Lembata had already erupted this year.
