Video: Life imprisonment and psychiatric treatment for Trier amok drivers

STORY: In the trial of the fatal rampage in Trier, the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and attempted murder. The Trier Regional Court also determined the particular gravity of the guilt. It ordered the 52-year-old to be placed in a psychiatric ward. On December 1, 2020, the man raced through the pedestrian zone in Trier in his off-road vehicle. According to the court, he wanted to kill or injure as many people as possible. At the end of his journey, five people were dead and 18 others injured. One of the injured died a year later. The 52-year-old said nothing about his motives. He was silent throughout the process. According to the indictment, he was single at the time of the crime, unemployed, without a permanent address and frustrated by his personal circumstances. The lawyer for the co-plaintiff Ottmar Schaffarczyk was satisfied with the verdict: “Yes, not only has a verdict been made in the name of the people, but also a verdict for all survivors and for the city of Trier. Our demand has been fulfilled. From my point of view he will never be free again.” The defense had advocated the man’s admission to a clinic, but did not name a specific sentence for their client. According to the opinion of a psychiatric expert, the man suffers from paranoid schizophrenia with delusions. He is therefore less culpable and is considered dangerous to the public.
