International project: Crochet against coral death

They are colorful and appear lifelike. But these corals, which will be shown in the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden from Saturday, are crocheted. With this special work of art, the two Australian sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim want to draw attention to the global dying of corals. Margaret Wertheim: “The Reef Project is based on several things: One is the idea of showing people a math that these corals were formed from, which is a completely different math from what we were taught in school. Then there it’s global warming that’s killing coral reefs.” The crochet project is an international community effort: around 20,000 people in 50 cities and countries took part. 40,000 crocheted corals were sent in for the exhibition in Baden-Baden alone.
