Video: Indonesia: Judgments after stadium disaster

STORY: After the stadium disaster in Indonesia that killed 135, a court sentenced a police officer to 18 months in prison. The man worked as the commander of the mobile brigade unit of the East Java Police Force, which used tear gas in the fatal operation. The presiding judge ruled that the police commander acted negligently when he gave the order to use tear gas. The public prosecutor had asked for a prison sentence of three years. Two other accused police officers were acquitted. The relatives of the victims who were present at the trial reacted with incomprehension to the court’s decisions. Andi Irfan, human rights activist: “Today’s verdict has not given us a sense of justice and fundamental rights for the victims, it is not reparation for them. This wound is too deep and it can only be healed with a sense of justice.” The disaster happened in early October 2022 after a football game in a sold-out stadium with 42,000 spectators. As a result of riots, there were violent clashes in and around the arena. 135 spectators were killed, including more than 40 children. An investigation by the Indonesian Human Rights Commission found that the root cause of the stampede was that police fired 45 rounds of tear gas into the crowd.
