Impressions from the embattled Mariupol
STORY: These are drone footage shot on Thursday. They show a destroyed apartment complex in the center of the port city of Mariupol in eastern Ukraine. Mariupol is currently one of the most contested places between the Russian military and the Ukrainian armed forces, who are still trying to defend their city. However, much information from the region cannot be independently verified. The fact is, however, that the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24 and has been going on for around 50 days. Hard to imagine that people still live here. But she tries, as current pictures from the city show. According to the Ukrainian authorities, tens of thousands of civilians have already been killed. Furthermore, the main port on the Azov Sea is considered one of the most important Russian offensive targets in the eastern Donbass region. After the withdrawal of troops around the capital Kyiv, Moscow has now officially turned its focus to this area. In Russia they don’t talk about war. There, the procedure in Ukraine is referred to as a “special operation”.
