Huge lava flows cause further destruction on La Palma

The volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma continues to cause destruction with huge lava flows. On the weekend, huge blocks of liquid lava flowed down the hills almost continuously. According to the Spanish Institute for Geology and Mining, the magma was as high as a three-story building. The residents are impressed: JESSICA FERRERA: “I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s majestic. Despite the damage that is being done to the families who are losing their homes and their jobs. Nobody knows how long it will take will still go. But for me it is fortunate to live on a volcanic island and to be able to see this wonder. ” O-TON PATRICIA DAVILA: “That’s something you don’t expect, but you’ve heard about it at school. They explained to us where we live and what can happen. And it’s unbelievable because you don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. But we’re just on a volcanic island. ” The authorities registered more than 20 minor tremors on Sunday alone, with strengths of up to 3.8. The Cumbre Vieja volcano has been active for a good three weeks. Almost 1,200 buildings have already been destroyed and around 6,000 people had to leave their homes for security reasons. The Canary Island, which is also popular with German tourists, has around 83,000 inhabitants. According to the Institute of Volcanology of the Canary Islands, the lava flow had a temperature of up to 1,240 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
