Video: Hollywood star Emmerich on Mozart’s footsteps

STORY: Original sound from the film clip: “The Queen of the Night awaits you.” Well, maybe not the Queen of the Night, but the assembled film press – at least here on Monday evening in Munich. Actors and film crew gathered on the red carpet for the German premiere of “The Magic Flute – The Legacy of the Magic Flute”. The fantasy adventure is based on the Mozart opera “The Magic Flute” and is the new work by Roland Emmerich. This time, however, the Hollywood director was active in the role of producer. “I was immediately enthusiastic about the idea and said: Let’s do it!” It tells the story of the boy Tim Walker, played by Jack Wolfe, who wants to study singing at a boarding school in Austria. However, the school turns out to be a magical place – the teenager is thrown into the magic world of Mozart’s “Magic Flute” via a secret portal and, as Prince Tamino, has to save the kidnapped Princess Pamina. “I think he’s a little braver than me,” says Wolfe. “What I like about Tim Walker is that he’s just a normal teenager who gets an escape from the world through classical music.” It was a challenge for director Florian Sigl to transform the world-famous piece of music into a film. “Most of the time, opera stories aren’t that complex, which means you have to work them through a bit so that it really works as a film and the viewer really enjoys it, and on the other hand the singing, of course, to get it across that you still want to listen to it.” The music is the most important thing in this film, emphasizes Iwan Rheon. The Game of Thrones star plays what is probably the most famous bird catcher in the world: Papageno in “The Legacy of the Magic Flute”. He hopes the film will help dispel prejudices that opera is only for the upper ten thousand. “Mozart wrote this stuff for everyone. That’s what he was trying to do and that’s what I hope this film can do for kids to understand this incredible music. He’s an incredible genius.” If you want to immerse yourself in the mysticism and magic of Mozart’s Magic Flute with the film heroes, you have to wait until November 17th. Then “The Magic Flute” starts in German cinemas.
