STORY: Germany supplies Ukraine with “Marder” tanks and a Patriot missile defense system. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden agreed on this in a telephone call on Thursday evening. Both governments also want to take care of the training of Ukrainian soldiers on the respective weapon systems. Scholz and Biden announced this in a joint press statement. The US will also supply the government in Kyiv with light Bradley armored personnel carriers and, as planned, Patriot systems. Federal government circles said that Ukraine should probably receive several dozen martens. The German-American agreement is the result of votes that have been ongoing between the two governments since December 10th. On Wednesday, France announced that it wanted to deliver AMX-10 RC reconnaissance tanks to Ukraine. According to a joint press statement, Biden and Scholz express their joint determination to provide Ukraine with the necessary financial, humanitarian, military and diplomatic support for as long as necessary. Biden and Scholz also said they recognized the military support provided to Ukraine by other allies and partners. Politicians in the traffic light coalition have been demanding for a long time that Germany should deliver both Marder and Leopard 2 heavy battle tanks to Ukraine. Scholz had always emphasized that Germany would only become active in these systems after close coordination with its western partners.
