Video: Frankfurt’s OB Feldmann voted out

STORY: Frankfurt’s citizens have decided: Peter Feldmann, Lord Mayor of the Main metropolis, is deselected. According to preliminary city data, around 95 percent of voters voted in a referendum in favor of deposing the SPD politician after scandals and ongoing court proceedings for corruption. The turnout was reportedly 41.9 percent. The necessary quorum of 30 percent of those entitled to vote was thus achieved. Feldmann admitted his defeat on Sunday. The evening did not bring the desired result, he said. “That’s the way it is, but it’s politics and it’s democracy. And the good thing about democracy is that sometimes it goes one way, sometimes the other way. And today it went in one direction.” Citizens celebrated the decision in front of the Frankfurt Römer. “We are glad that Feldmann was voted out, that there was such a large participation of the citizens of Frankfurt. And we hope that the city is now going into a future where you don’t have to be ashamed of this city again. We had to be ashamed of our Lord Mayor. And this state of affairs has now ended.” Feldmann had been under constant political fire for months. The SPD politician had also rejected calls for his own party to resign. Now the citizens have decided. When the official final result is available on Friday, Feldmann wants to clear his desk in Frankfurt’s Römer.
