Video: Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood is dead

STORY: Vivienne Westwood was a fashion icon. And stood as a synonym for the punk rock of the 1970s. A rebellious and political designer who became one of the biggest names in British fashion. She died on Thursday at the age of 81. Climate change, pollution and their support for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange have always prompted protest T-shirts or banners worn by their models on the catwalk. “I just use my fashion as an excuse to express my opinions about politics and culture, really. I believe fashion can make a difference. I think my fashion gives you incredible choice in an age of conformity and it makes you awesome look and helps you to express your individuality.” Instantly recognizable with her orange or white hair, Westwood first made a name for herself in punk fashion in 1970s London. She dressed the punk rock band Sex Pistols. Her designs, which often look back on history, include corsets, tweed suits and ball gowns. Westwood used her prominence to advocate for issues such as nuclear disarmament. And to protest against anti-terror laws, the government’s social policies and for more environmental protection. “Because I’m so traumatized by the shock of understanding what’s going to happen if the Earth keeps warming. And in a few generations, billions of people will die if we don’t do something now.” The Westwood brand thrived in the 1990s. Fashionistas flocked to her shows on the catwalks. She opened stores in Paris and around the world. Westwood was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992.
