With a funeral service in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion, fans, friends and old companions said goodbye to Uwe Seeler. The HSV legend died on July 21 at the age of 85. Around 5000 people paid their last respects to “Us Uwe” on Wednesday. Among the guests were Chancellor Olaf Scholz and DFB national coach Hansi Flick. Seeler was not only a great footballer, but also a great person, said Hamburg’s Mayor Peter Tschentscher: “But his memory goes far beyond football. With his down-to-earthness and approachability, he was also a great human role model. His name stands for Fairness and team spirit. He embodies the best and most important values as an athlete and as a person. Loyal and humble. The greatest of all time, that’s how it was last time in the game against Rostock in the north curve.” Uwe Seeler leaves a big gap, he will never be forgotten, it was also said in the other eulogies. The funeral speeches were interrupted by pieces of music that belonged to Seeler’s favorite melodies and had been chosen by the family. Seeler was buried on August 4th with his immediate family in his hometown of Hamburg.
