Video: EU agrees to tighten emissions trading

STORY: The EU states and the European Parliament have agreed to tighten the rules for emissions trading to combat global warming. After that, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced by 62 percent by 2030 compared to 2005 levels, as the EU institutions announced on Sunday. It is planned to withdraw a total of 90 million certificates from the emissions trading system in 2024, with a further 27 million to be added in 2026. The negotiator in the EU Parliament, the German MP Peter Liese from the conservative People’s Party EPP, reported on Twitter about the “biggest climate law ever negotiated in the European Union. In the EU’s CO2 trade, around 10,000 power plants and factories have to purchase certificates in order to emit greenhouse gases Liese said that those who have not significantly reduced their emissions by 2027 will have to pay a lot.
