End of the line nuclear phase-out: On-site visit in Gundremmingen
The phase-out of nuclear power will enter the next round at the end of the year with the shutdown of three nuclear power plants. This also affects the Gundremmingen C nuclear power plant. For decades, the nuclear power plant was an important factor in the power supply in southern Germany and played an important role in economic growth in the region. The CSU Mayor of Gundremmingen, Tobias Bühler, is not worried that it is over now: “We are not worried that we will get into economic difficulties as a result. Gundremmingen, as far as trade tax payments are concerned, we have very good and very solvent companies here, too, who continue to pay us with trade tax. ” More than eleven years after the decision to accelerate nuclear phase-out, Germany will say goodbye to nuclear energy at the end of 2022. That is a good thing, says Arne Fellermann, energy expert at the environmental protection organization BUND: “The nuclear phase-out has been an issue of the heart for BUND for decades because the technology is simply too risky for us. And in today’s situation it is even more clear that It is really important that we get out of this somewhat unsafe, expensive, unsustainable technology. That’s why we are so happy that a few reactors will actually be shut down at the end of the year and that the nuclear phase-out will be almost complete next year. ” In 2021, according to preliminary figures from the industry association BDEW, the six still running nuclear power plants will contribute around twelve percent to electricity production in Germany in 2021. The share of renewable energies was almost 41 percent. Coal came to just under 28 percent, gas a good 15 percent. By 2030, the proportion of renewables is to increase to 80 percent. If the last nuclear power plant in Germany is shut down in just over a year, the chapter on nuclear energy is far from over in this country. A decision is to be taken by 2031 where a nuclear waste repository will be built in Germany. Commissioning is planned for 2050.
