Video: El Salvador: Another 2,000 gang members transferred to controversial prison

STORY: In El Salvador, 2,000 more people have been brought to a new mega-detention center that will once house tens of thousands of inmates. These images have now been released by the country’s government. It shows prisoners who are naked except for white shorts. Their heads are shaved. Many have tattoos identifying them as members of a gang. The controversial prison is located about 75 kilometers from the capital San Salvador and is considered the largest prison in America. It is needed because President Nayib Bukele’s government has been taking a hard line against the country’s criminal gangs for some time. The state of emergency has been in force in El Salvador for almost a year and was recently extended again by parliament. It allows the police to arrest suspects without an arrest warrant. Around 65,000 suspected gang members have been arrested so far. Before the state of emergency was declared, the number of murders attributed to violent gangs had risen dramatically. El Salvador was once considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
