Eiffel Tower grows by six meters

STORY: The Eiffel Tower grew by six meters on Tuesday. This helicopter, which was used to attach an antenna for digital radio to the top of the tower, helped with this. Jean-Francois Martins, President of the Eiffel Tower Society, is delighted: “I’m relieved and touched, this is a historic moment. From now on we can say that the Eiffel Tower has grown, it doesn’t happen that often, it’s 330 now , instead of 324 meters high as before. With this we continue to write the great story of the tower, a story of technical and scientific progress.” During its construction, the Eiffel Tower surpassed the Washington Monument, making it the tallest man-made structure in the world. He held that title for four decades, until it was topped by the Chrysler Building in New York City in 1929. According to TripAdvisor, the wrought iron lattice tower is one of the most visited attractions in the world. For more than 100 years, however, it has also been used for radio transmissions, with the height of its peak changing several times – whenever obsolete antennas have been replaced.
