Video: Dispute over Israel’s judicial reform escalates – defense minister fired

STORY: In Israel, tens of thousands of people protested again on Sunday against the planned judicial reform. The country’s worst domestic political crisis in years reached a new high with the dismissal of Secretary of Defense Joaw Gallant. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Gallant on Sunday after he criticized Netanyahu’s handling of the controversial judicial reform. On Sunday evening, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv took to the streets to protest the minister’s expulsion. Many waved the blue and white Israeli flag. Demonstrators broke through barricades in front of Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem. The police used water cannons. Politicians and other public figures protested Netanyahu’s decision. Gallant had expressed concern that reservists had announced they would refuse to serve in the military in protest at judicial reform. While he supports reform of the judiciary, this requires a broad consensus, he said.
