Video: Director Berger “insanely happy” about Oscar success

STORY: Edward Berger really deserves the party. The German director’s work won the Oscars. Four trophies for the anti-war drama “Nothing New in the West”: Best International Film, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design and Best Music. It is the first German film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel of the same name from 1928. It depicts the devastation and horror of the First World War from the perspective of a German soldier. The first film adaptation, made in Hollywood in 1930, still enjoys cult status today. O-ton Edward Berger: “Well, it just makes us incredibly happy to be here and to be following in the footsteps of such a great film. It was also successful at the Oscars. And it wasn’t easy to get over it, this hurdle. For a long time I doubted whether we should really do this film because the film is so great. But in the end I thought it was an American film, it’s almost 100 years old, 90, 95 years old . It’s time to just make the film in its original language, in German. And that’s what we tried. And we’re incredibly happy that the Academy rewarded this with four Oscars.” Even if the film, which has been nominated nine times, went empty-handed in the top category “Best Film”, it remains a record success. Never before has a German film scored so many points at the Academy Awards.
