Video: Desperate situation in Syrian earthquake zones

STORY: 25-year-old Youssef is in deep mourning. The citizen of the Syrian city of Aleppo lost his entire family in the severe earthquakes in the Turkish-Syrian border region. The house where Youssef lived is in ruins. He is desperate: “My whole family died: my father, my mother, my brother, my sister and my nephew. I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it. Yesterday we pulled out my mother and brother dead – and today we pulled out the bodies of my sister, my nephew and my father.” The authorities and the civil protection organization “White Helmets” run by the opposition in the rebel areas in the north-west recently reported more than 3,000 deaths in Syria. Desperation grew in the disaster area: cold and hunger are affecting hundreds of thousands of homeless people more and more, and hopes for those buried are dwindling. According to the United Nations, almost 10.9 million people in Syria have been affected by the earthquake. Among other places, in Hama, Latakia, Idlib and Aleppo – a region that has already suffered particularly from the almost twelve years of civil war. On Thursday, an aid convoy organized by Kurds made its way to the Syrian earthquake areas. The trucks transported water and blankets, among other things, but also petrol. Because of the difficult political situation, the helpers struggle with bureaucratic obstacles and repeatedly encounter resistance. Your help is urgently needed. The damage caused by the tremors also prevented the regular UN aid, on which four million people in north-western Syria depend.
