Deadlock in the election of the new president in Italy

In Italy, the election of a new president is deadlocked. On Friday, the right-wing conservative camp failed in the electoral body of around 1,000 parliamentarians and regional representatives with the conservative MP Elisabetta Casellati, who received only 382 votes in the secret ballot. However, an absolute majority of at least 505 votes is required. With the election, tensions with the left-liberal bloc also grew, because Casellati’s candidacy was not coordinated between the two camps. After the defeat, the sixth round of voting also failed on Friday because the right-wing block abstained and the left-wing camp had not put up a candidate.
