STORY: Eighty-eight white doves flew high in the sky in Sydney on Wednesday. A symbolic action to commemorate the deaths of 88 Australians who died in the Bali, Indonesia bombings exactly 20 years ago. Jan Roberts lost her son Ben at the time. “Everyone deals with grief differently. My knees were getting weak and I needed rest. I continued to exist but wasn’t really there – for two years.” The victims were also commemorated on the holiday island of Bali, which is particularly popular with Australian tourists. Among other things, tourists and locals visited a memorial at the site of the attacks. A total of 202 people died at the time. The two almost simultaneous explosions occurred late in the evening on October 12, 2002 in the Kuta district. A militant Islamist group was blamed for the attack. After the assassination, Indonesia set up an elite counter-terrorism unit, and scores of suspected militants were arrested or killed as a result.
