Colorado: Thousands of people flee forest fires

In the US state of Colorado, several forest fires broke out in the middle of winter. The cities of Louisville and Superior had to be evacuated. In strong winds, the flames spread rapidly. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed and there were also said to have been injuries. The National Weather Service warned of a life-threatening situation. According to the authorities, the fires were believed to have been started by sparks from power lines and transformers overturned by strong winds. Thick smoke hung over the affected areas, making it difficult for those who had to get to safety to see. The radar showed a huge cloud of smoke and ash that emanated from the fire and spread across the region. Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a state of emergency. This also made it possible to mobilize the National Guard. According to the authorities, there have been no reports of missing people or fatalities.
