Climate activists urge banks to act

On Friday, several organizations for environmental and climate protection called for protests aimed directly at banks. On the Willy-Brandt-Platz in Frankfurt, against the background of the Commerzbank and the Euro sculpture, a several hundred square meter “floor image” with the slogan “Stop funding fossil fuels” was created. Kerstin Kreß is the spokesperson for the Koalakollektiv group: “Today protests are taking place in over 120 locations around the world. Protests against the financing of the destruction of our livelihoods. Here in Frankfurt in the financial metropolis, too, we are addressing the big banks such as Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank or the Sparkassen Group, which is still investing billions of dollars in future hostile companies such as TotalEnergies or Repsol. In Berlin, a Greenpeace group held a vigil in front of the Deutsche Bundesbank. Greenpeace financial expert Moritz Vargas said: “And what we are now calling for is that monetary policy, including the Deutsche Bundesbank, should be serious and that companies that do not act in accordance with the Paris climate targets should no longer favor monetary policy.” The 26th UN Climate Change Conference begins on Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland. Before the event, protests by climate protection activists took place around the world, demanding that decision-makers take more measures against climate change.
