Video: Chile – New constitution rejected in referendum

STORY: In a referendum in Chile, citizens rejected a new constitution with a clear majority. 62.2 percent spoke out against the amendment to the Basic Law, the Chilean electoral authorities said after counting more than 72 percent of the votes on Sunday. The new constitution, which focuses on social rights, the environment, gender equality and indigenous rights, was set to replace the current text, which dates back to Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. After the massive protests against social injustice in 2019, almost 80 percent of Chileans spoke out in favor of drafting a new constitution. However, recent pre-election polls showed that public support had declined due to. President Gabriel Boric’s office said a meeting with the political parties had been called for Monday. Regardless of the outcome, the government will work with all sectors to “promote justice, equality, growth and development for all.”
