Video: Cheering and mourning at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame

STORY: The Eurythmics, Lionel Richie and Dolly Parton – musically these three show legends don’t have much in common. But over the weekend they had one reason to celebrate together – their induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Seven musicians are new to the honor list, including Eminem, Carly Simon, Pet Benatar and Duran Duran. The English pop band and the US rapper also brought depressing tones to the glitter show. While Eminem was on stage discussing his drug addiction that nearly killed him, Duran-Duran frontman Simon Le Bon read out a letter in which his guitarist Andy Taylor revealed he had end-stage prostate cancer. Learning that a friend or family member would not be around much longer was absolutely devastating, Le Bon said after the show. “Not a colleague but It’s absolutely devastating. We love Andy with all our hearts. I’m not going to stand here and cry because I don’t think that would be very appropriate, but that’s how I feel.” As a consolation, the band may have been thanked by Annie Lennox for their induction into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame. “We musicians bring people together in joy, in sorrow, in movement, beauty, inspiration and reflection. Music is in our blood cells, in our hearts and in the deepest part of our souls”. And so the show, which will be broadcast on US broadcaster HBO on November 19, became a celebration of music that transcends genre boundaries – and a tribute to one of the first artists ever to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame was – the recently deceased Jerry Lee Lewis.
