Video: Bolsonaro supporters storm government buildings in Brasilia

STORY: In Brazil, supporters of former President Bolsonaro stormed the Congress building, the Supreme Court and the Presidential Palace on Sunday, wreaking havoc. Video footage showed thousands of people smashing windows and destroying furniture in buildings in the capital, Brasilia. The police used tear gas. The new leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula Silva was staying in the state of Sao Paulo. He blamed the right-wing populist Bolsonaro for the violence and complained that fascists and fanatics could have raged because of inadequate security precautions. Lula Da Silva, President of Brazil: “I want to tell you that all the people who have done this will be found and punished. You will realize that democracy guarantees the right to liberty and freedom of expression, but it also requires that “The people respect the institutions that were created to strengthen democracy. These people, these vandals, who you could call fanatical Nazis or fanatical Fascists, have done something that has never happened in this country.” According to media reports, the security forces regained control of the three branches of government later in the day. Dozens of demonstrators were taken away in handcuffs. Events in Brasilia recalled the January 6, 2021 storming of the US Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump. They did not recognize Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory. Trump’s successor Biden called the situation in Brazil outrageous. The EU, France, Spain, Portugal, Great Britain and other Western countries immediately condemned the violence and spoke of an attack on democracy.
