US President Joe Biden wants to threaten his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin with serious economic consequences in the event of an attack on Ukraine. A US government official said in the run-up to the two presidents’ video call scheduled for Tuesday that the US, together with its European allies, would have worked out a sharp response in the event of an invasion. A few hours earlier, Russian government spokesman Dmitri Peskov announced that the video conference between the two presidents would deal with the Ukraine conflict, NATO and the security guarantees for Russia demanded by Putin. The government in Moscow is demanding that NATO stop its expansion to the east. Russia’s neighbor Ukraine is seeking to join the Western military alliance in what Russia calls crossing a red line.
