At least one dead and injured in the attack in Jerusalem
According to the Israeli police, a Palestinian attacker shot and killed one person and injured three others in Jerusalem. The assassin, who was armed with a submachine gun, was then shot by the police, said a police spokesman on Sunday. The man shot one civilian, seriously injured another civilian and slightly injured two police officers. According to Security Minister Omer Barlev, the shooter was a resident of East Jerusalem who belonged to the radical Islamic Palestinian group Hamas. It is the second attack in Jerusalem within a few days. It happened near one of the gates to the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in the Old City, one of the holiest sites in Islam. But also for Jews and Christians there are holy places. A 16-year-old Palestinian was only killed by security forces on Wednesday after he attacked and injured two police officers with a knife. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is always the starting point for tensions between Palestinians and Israel. In May, massive violent clashes sparked the worst fighting between the Israeli military and radical Palestinians from the Gaza Strip in years. Israel had taken the eastern part of Jerusalem including the old city in the course of the Six Day War in 1967. The Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state, Israel for its part claim the entire city as the indivisible capital.
