Amy Gutmann new US ambassador to Germany
Flashbulbs for the new American ambassador in Berlin. Politics professor Amy Gutmann presented her credentials to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday. The 72-year-old is the first woman ever to head the US embassy in Germany. The top position in the US Mission had been vacant for almost two years. Longer than at any time since World War II. US President Joe Biden had already nominated Gutmann in July last year. The US Republicans had initially blocked the personnel in the Senate. Gutmann is the daughter of a Jewish father who fled Nazi Germany in 1934. She is considered a confidante of US President Biden. As a scientist, she has received numerous awards. However, she has no diplomatic experience.
