Tenth day lockdown for 13 million residents of Xian

Xian is upgrading. Chinese state television reported on Saturday that the city at the center of the current coronavirus outbreak is expanding its medical facilities, opening three hospitals and providing 3,000 beds for COVID patients. The city reported more than 170 new infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in mainland China to more than 1,100 in the past week. The virus was apparently brought in from Pakistan. The thirteen million residents of Xian meanwhile spend the tenth day in lockdown. Many of them are not allowed to leave their apartment blocks. The strict measures are intended to end the coronavirus outbreak in the city. The strategy of the Chinese authorities aims to completely prevent the spread of the virus, not least because the Olympic Winter Games will take place in Beijing in February.
