Victory in the final: Spain’s footballers are world champions for the first time

Spain are world champions for the first time in their history. In an intense final, the team prevailed against European champions England. Captain Olga Carmona Garcia scored the decisive goal to make it 1-0 after 29 minutes in the Sydney final. In the 70th minute, England goalkeeper Mary Earps saved a penalty from Jenni Hermoso and in the 13 minutes of injury time Spain defended their lead with great passion against the attacking English women.

It is the first major title for Spain’s female footballers. The best result so far at a World Cup was a round of 16 entry in 2019, until 2011 the country never took part in a World Cup. At the European Championship, the team was eliminated three times in the quarterfinals, and Spain has never qualified for the Olympics.
