Victor Wembanyama, after his first selection for the France team: “So much fun”

“Were you nervous before your first selection?
No way. There was just the best excitement. I was hungry for victory. And that’s what I remember first of this evening. It was just fun. The biggest accomplishment is never giving them hope that they could get back into the game. We stayed calm and everyone had a lot of fun tonight.

You only become the fourth Frenchman to score 20 points on his debut in blue, along with Robert Busnel (30 in 1934), Bob Riley (25 in 1976) and Apollo Faye (20 in 1979)…
The record is at 30? There was room (he laughs). But the coach saved me in the fourth quarter, it’s normal, there is a match on Monday. It’s nice to be in good company, but you can always do better.

Vincent Collet says that to dominate you have to stay yourself. How do you rate your performance?
I tried to keep my habits as much as possible. What Vincent says confirms to me that I am right to believe in myself, in my abilities. In difficult times, I only have to refocus and turn to myself and what I know to find the right mental disposition. This trust I will never lose. »
