Victim of NSU flashlight attack receives compensation from Bavaria – Bavaria

Mehmet O. survived the first known murder attempt by the NSU in Nuremberg in June 1999. “Bavaria was long overdue to recognize him as a victim of the NSU,” says Green Party politician Toni Schuberl.

24 years after the so-called flashlight attack by the National Socialist Underground (NSU) in Nuremberg, the victim Mehmet O. will receive compensation. The board of trustees of Bavarian victim support decided to grant 5,000 euros, said the chairman of the NSU investigative committee in the Bavarian state parliament, Toni Schuberl (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), on Friday. The foundation is an institution of the Bavarian state government.

“Bavaria’s recognition as a victim of the NSU was long overdue,” said Schuberl. Minister of Justice Georg Eisenreich (CSU) also supports the application. Schuberl sees the approval as a signal of recognition by the Free State.

With a lot of luck, Mehmet O. survived the first known murder attempt by the NSU in June 1999. It was an attack on the Nuremberg restaurant “Sonnenschein”, in which the perpetrators had planted a pipe bomb disguised as a flashlight. O. survived due to a design flaw in the bomb.

“My whole life has changed,” O. testified publicly in the second NSU investigative committee of the Bavarian state parliament. His life is ruined. So far, according to Schuberl, he has received recognition from the federal government and the Free State of Thuringia in the amount of 5,000 euros and 3,000 euros respectively.
