For years, a man in Verona slept next to his dead mother in her apartment and pocketed her pension at the same time. Various media report this. His mother has been missing since 2017. He told neighbors that his then 86-year-old mother had returned to Germany, her home country.

Six years and around 180,000 euros in stolen pensions later, the fraud was finally exposed: the authorities had noticed that the woman, who was born in 1934, had not been to the doctor for years during the corona pandemic and had not used any other health insurance services. A report was also filed with the local police. Local residents had complained about homeless people on a property owned by the deceased.

Investigations against the son for serious fraud and disturbing the peace of the dead

After repeated unanswered contact attempts by the police, the investigators went in search of the woman. Police officers knocked on the woman’s door last Thursday, but no one responded. The police then gained access to the apartment, where they found the woman’s body wrapped in plastic bags.

The corpse was already badly decomposed and lay on a bed in which the woman had slept with her son while she was alive. The 60-year-old son was not on site when the rooms were searched. He later turned himself in to the police. He is now being investigated on suspicion of serious fraud and disturbing the peace of the dead. An autopsy of the body will determine what caused the woman’s death.
