Verdict – Ban on Danish Feta – Economy

Whether feta, Allgäuer Bergkäse or Chianti: According to a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the EU rules for protected designations of origin also apply to companies that do not produce their products for the European market. Manufacturers from EU countries are therefore not allowed to offer any products in third countries under names that they are not allowed to sell within the EU. In addition, states must pursue possible violations, as the ECJ decision shows. The court dealt with the case because Denmark allowed cheese produced there to be marketed as feta in third countries. The EU Commission took action against this behavior, supported by Greece and Cyprus. Denmark, on the other hand, took the position that the corresponding EU regulation only applies to products that are marketed in the Union.
