Things are slowly becoming confusing, with one wave of strikes following the next. The reason: The Verdi union wants to push through 10.5 percent more wages for the nationwide 2.5 million federal and local employees, but at least 500 euros more per month.
Because the negotiations have so far been unsuccessful, things are moving on: On March 27, there could be a widespread strike in the transport sector. The railway and transport union EVG would also participate in this.
In addition to Deutsche Bahn, local public transport, airports and the federal highway company would also be affected. And until then, a few more regional work stoppages are planned. An overview, sorted by federal states.
Baden-Wuerttemberg
The airports in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden will be on strike all day on Friday. There will be no regular flight operations in Stuttgart, the airport operator said. Only security landings and medical and military flights could be carried out. A regular 169 flight movements were planned for Friday, and around 20,000 passengers are affected by the warning strike. No flight cancellations were known in Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden on Wednesday evening.
The union has also called on workers in the private energy sector to go on warning strikes. However, these should not take place until next Wednesday.
Bavaria
In Bavaria, further strikes in hospitals and clinics are planned for Thursday, including in Munich, Kitzingen and Freising. The focus on Friday is in Munich: Administrative staff, therapists, nursing staff and kitchen workers will stop working in all five houses of the Munich Clinic.
In Augsburg, the supply and disposal companies are also on strike on Thursday and Friday. Verdi calls on the employees of the municipal utilities, the sewage works, the waste management and the street cleaning to stop their work. Local transport is not affected by the strikes, they say.
Next Tuesday (March 21), Munich is facing a major strike: All administrative areas of the city, social and educational services, the Munich waste management company, several companies of the municipal utility, including the baths, Munich clinic, municipal savings bank and employment agency have been called to strike and other positions. Local public transport is not affected because separate collective bargaining is taking place for it.
Lower Saxony and Bremen
Verdi also wants to increase the pressure on employers in the north of the country. There will be further actions on Wednesday (March 22nd): Public administrations, local public transport, day care centers and garbage disposal will also be affected by the expansion of the strike in the coming week. Verdi wants to organize central rallies in Hanover and Bremen.
Once again, employees of the Üstra Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe and the waste disposal company Aha are to stop working. Verdi expects that there will be no buses and trains in the state capital on Wednesday and Thursday and that the garbage will be left behind.
North Rhine-Westphalia
According to Verdi, local transport in Düsseldorf is to be on strike on Thursday, March 16. Local transport in Cologne will be affected next Monday and Tuesday, according to the Cologne transport company.
For Friday (March 17), the union in Cologne is also calling for daycare centers to go on warning strikes, as the city announced. The workforce at the airports in Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn were also called on to go on strike on this day. Due to shift work, the walkout in Cologne/Bonn begins in the night from Thursday to Friday and ends in some areas in the early hours of Saturday morning.
