Venice: low tide in the canals makes gondoliers to create

Watch the video: Venice’s canals are almost completely empty.

At the end of last week, Venice’s gondoliers had to use all their skills to move forward on the canals of the lagoon city. The reason: there is low tide in Venice, the small canals were almost dry. The low water is caused by the insufficient rainfall in northern Italy. The full moon last Friday also increased the tides in Venice. This makes it more difficult not only to transport tourists, but also goods. Most of the time, Venice struggles with too much water instead of too little. The so-called “acqua alta” is caused by a combination of different factors that are exacerbated by climate change. The rise in sea level also plays an important role. In order to protect themselves from the flood, the “Moses” protection system was put into operation last year after 17 years of construction. 78 moveable gates are now supposed to protect Venice from the floods.
