A chunk of ice fell from the sky onto a children’s playground in Vaterstetten on Friday morning. A 34-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter were staying nearby. Both were unharmed, “thank God,” as the police noted. Because the round block of ice had a diameter of about 30 centimeters.
The lump shattered on the floor. By the time the police arrived on Brunnenstraße in Vaterstetten, most of the chunk had already melted. However, a small remainder could be secured.
The Poinger police initially assumed that the chunk could have been toilet residue from an airplane and notified the relevant authorities for clarification. After consultation with air traffic controllers and the aviation authority, it was found out that toilet residues were generally harmless. Rather, the chunk is more of a frozen lump of condensation water that broke away from the aircraft at an unfavorable moment, i.e. over an inhabited area. According to the police, a plane that crossed the Vaterstetten airspace at around 9.45 a.m. could not be identified with certainty.
Since it does not have to be assumed that there were chemical residues or the like in the chunk, according to the police there is no danger for further use of the playground.
