Valve gives the handheld PC a makeover with 90 Hz and HDR at 1,000 cd/m²

Valve has given the Steam Deck a quick makeover and is now releasing its handheld PC with a larger OLED display and a more economical 6 nm Costum APU codenamed “Sephiroth”, as well as a faster main memory and more storage space. The Steam Deck with LC display is now a cheap entry-level option and also receives a memory upgrade. The focus is undoubtedly the OLED display, which also increases the screen diagonal slightly and is 0.4 inches larger.

7.4 inch OLED display with 90 Hz and HDR

With the new Steam Deck OLED, which Valve officially presented this evening in a complete surprise, the first glance is of course at the eponymous 7.4-inch OLED display, which still has a resolution of 1,280 × 800 pixels and now thanks to a selective peak brightness of up to 1,000 cd/m² also offers support for HDR content with extended dynamic range. The refresh rate has also been increased and is now 90 instead of 60 Hz.

Prices for the Steam Deck OLED start at 579 euros for the model with a 512 GiByte PCIe SSD, which makes the Steam Deck significantly cheaper in the new evolutionary stage. For the handheld PC with 512 GiByte of permanent memory, 619 euros were previously due. For the price of the old top configuration, gamers now get twice the amount of storage space, thanks to an NVMe SSD with a generous 1,024 GiByte, which is connected via PCIe 3.0 x4. The entry-level configuration is the Steam Deck LCD and 256 GiByte.

The Steam Deck LCD with 64 GiByte and 512 GiByte are currently on sale at prices of 369 euros and 469 euros and are only available while stocks last. All variants can be accessed via the official website be acquired.

All new features of the Steam Deck OLED

The innovations of the Steam Deck OLED, which also has an optimized custom APU (“Sephiroth”) and faster RAM, compared to the Steam Deck LCD are as follows.

  • 7.4-inch OLED display with HDR support and 90 Hz
  • Custom APU (“Sephiroth”) which is manufactured in 6 nm instead of 7 nm
  • Faster LPDDR5 memory at 6,400 MT/s instead of 5,500 MT/s
  • A battery increased from 40 Wh to 50 Wh for up to 12 hours of playtime instead of 8 hours
  • Wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi 6E instead of Wi-Fi 5

The Steam Deck OLED in both configurations will be officially available from November 16th at 7 p.m. Central European Time. There will also be a special edition with orange accents, which will only be offered in the USA and Canada and will not be available in stores here.
