Very elderly couples from a retirement home in Cardiff, Wales, reveal their recipes for lifelong affection: “Husband can grill and make gin and tonic” is one of them.

The key to a good marriage is: “A husband who knows how to grill and make an exceptionally good gin and tonic,” said Josephine Langley from Wales, according to a report by the British news agency PA. The 90-year-old has been married to Aubrey Langley (91) for almost 64 years. The couple met while foxtrot dancing in North Wales in 1958.

The Langleys and two other couples who were interviewed on Valentine’s Day have a total of 199 years of marriage. Olwen (100) and Arthur Hayward (101) have been married for more than 75 years – their happy union is based on “a happy marriage and a loving family”. The couple, who met in 1943, have two children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Patricia Chesney (83), who has been married to John (84) for 61 years and has a daughter with him, gave a cheeky tip: “Let your husband think that he is the boss as long as he obeys his wife.”

The three couples, who live in a retirement home in the Welsh capital Cardiff, were served a special Valentine’s Day dinner including champagne and cocktails, with the dining room decorated with heart-shaped balloons and rose petals.
