Lauterbach wants to “bring the pandemic to an end”

When he took office, the newly minted Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach swore to fight the Omikron variant. He finds words of praise for his predecessor Jens Spahn. He in turn admits his own mistakes during his tenure.

The new Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach has announced a decisive fight against the Corona crisis. “The most important task for the house is to end the pandemic for Germany,” said the SPD politician when he took office in Berlin. Everything should be done to cope with the new virus variant Omikron. Booster vaccinations should be resumed in the area as soon as possible. “We will continue to boost and vaccinate until we have brought the pandemic to an end,” said Lauterbach. This can be achieved together.

Lauterbach thanked his retired predecessor Jens Spahn. It is also thanks to his work that Germany got through the first three corona waves better than almost all other European countries. “We would like to continue this work.”

The new minister made it clear that his approach was very scientifically shaped. Health policy can only be successful if it is anchored in science. Spahn wished his successor strength, success and perseverance. He reiterated that more than enough vaccine was available and that the stated goal of up to 30 million vaccinations by the end of the year would be achieved.

In the course of the pandemic, it was always acted and decided to the best of our knowledge and belief, even with great uncertainty and with many imponderables. “It was the biggest task of my life so far, with all its ups and downs. And yet I wouldn’t want to swap a day,” said Spahn. With today’s knowledge, however, he would make some decisions and communicate differently. “Yes, with the next pandemic, I would know how to do some things better.”
