After eight months of operation and more than a million corona vaccinations, the Hamburg vaccination center was closed on Tuesday evening.
On the last day, Germany’s largest vaccination center was once again very popular. A total of around 6,000 men and women came to the exhibition halls on Tuesday, with the majority receiving a second vaccination with the Biontech vaccine. Spontaneous people could also get a single vaccination with the active ingredient from Johnson & Johnson.
Good mood, but also sadness
The medical director of the vaccination center, Dirk Heinrich, reported that there was a good mood on the final day. The colleagues took selfies, there was coffee and cake, some employees wore hats. However, there is also sadness among the employees, because in the eight months since the vaccination center opened at the beginning of January, a team has really grown together. The vaccination center had up to 4,400 employees, including more than 1,000 medical assistants and almost 900 doctors.
Costs around 106 million euros
In the past eight months, a good 1.16 million vaccinations have been administered in the exhibition halls, according to the social authorities. The costs, half of which are borne by the federal government and half by the city, amount to around 106 million euros, according to the information. The closure is going according to plan, said the social authority. The contract expires, and another operation would no longer be economical. “Everyone who wanted to be vaccinated there did that too,” said a spokeswoman.

Vaccinations now at doctors, clinics or mobile vaccination teams
Mobile vaccination teams are now supposed to visit people on site – in schools, town houses, parishes, mosques or even at the football stadium. More than 1,100 medical practices, ten hospitals and company doctors also take part in the Hamburg vaccination campaign. With the mobile vaccination teams, citizens can choose whether they want the vaccine from Biontech – the mobile team comes back about three weeks later for a second vaccination – or the active ingredient from Johnson & Johnson, which only needs to be vaccinated once.
There are special vaccination campaigns, for example, on Friday in Volksparkstadion or in the Elbphilharmonie.
