A six-year-old boy shot a teacher in the small American town of Newport News, Virginia, police said on Friday. She was critically injured. The student was initially taken into police custody, police spokesman Chief Steve Drew said in a news conference.
According to initial findings, it was not an accident. According to the police, a dispute between the student and the teacher preceded the incident at the Richneck Elementary School, reports the US broadcaster CNN. The boy pulled out a pistol and fired a shot. Other students were not affected. The victim is being treated in the hospital and the woman’s condition has improved somewhat.
The police are now trying to find out where the six-year-old got a gun and how the argument came about. The elementary school was initially closed. “I’m in shock and discouraged,” said George Parker, spokesman for the school board, at the press conference on Friday (local time). “We have to educate our children and we have to protect them.”
