A police officer fired multiple shots at a teenager in the United States. The 17-year-old was sitting in his car in a parking lot in front of a McDonald’s in San Antonio, Texas, when the cop threw open the door and shortly afterwards, without warning, opened fire.

The images from the body cam leave you speechless. A police officer opens the door of a car in a McDonald’s parking lot. In it sits a teenager who is eating a burger. “Get out of the car,” the police officer orders. Startled and obviously in a panic, the teenager grabs the shift knob of the automatic transmission and apparently puts it into reverse. As the car begins to roll, the cop steps back and draws his gun. He then fires several times at the moving car.

The 17-year-old teenager was taken to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and in critical condition. A 17-year-old girl was in the passenger seat, but was unharmed.

A police statement said the police officer, who had only been on duty for seven months, was still on probation and apparently confused the teenager. Accordingly, he was called to the fast food restaurant because of a disturbance of the peace. In the parking lot, he saw what he believed to be the same vehicle he had escaped in a chase the day before, and which he believed might have been stolen.

The police officer was summarily fired after the incident. “The former officer’s actions are unjustifiable and inconsistent with our training, tactics and procedures,” San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus said at a news conference. “That’s why I fired him. I will reserve the right to comment further as this incident is still under investigation.”
