His case drew a lot of attention last summer when he was taped to his chair as a passenger who misbehaved on a flight. Now the 23-year-old has been sentenced to prison.

On a flight from Philadelphia to Miami last year, Maxwell Berry was taped to his seat, to much cheering from other passengers. The 23-year-old had previously groped two flight attendants and hit a flight attendant. A fellow passenger filmed the incident, which took place on July 31, 2021 on a Frontier Airlines plane, and posted it online. Now the young man has been sentenced to 60 days in prison.

As the “New York Times” reports, the young man from Ohio pleaded guilty to three counts of assault before the US District Court in Miami in February. In addition to the jail term, Berry was sentenced to a $2,500 fine and more than $1,500 in damages.

Man is said to have grabbed the breasts of flight attendants

Berry had ordered his third alcoholic drink on that flight when he bumped his empty cup on the butt of the flight attendant, who then told him not to touch it. He later spilled a drink on himself and came out of the restroom shirtless. A flight attendant told him he needed to get dressed and helped him find a shirt in his luggage. He is said to have walked around half-naked on the plane for around 15 minutes and groped the breasts of the female flight attendants.

He is also said to have punched a male flight attendant in the face who had been called to watch him. Eventually, he was taped to his chair and taken off in handcuffs by police upon landing.

A fellow passenger films the process and the video has since gone viral on the internet.

USA: Many cases of aggressive behavior on airplanes

Again and again, flight attendants have to take drastic measures because passengers are abusive or violent. From January to August 2021, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recorded more than 2,500 reports of aggressive behavior by passengers on American airplanes – more than twice as many as in 2019 and 2020. The so-called “duct tape”, with which passengers however, having their seats tied should be the last resort.
