After a 20-month hiatus, it will be easier for tourists and business people to travel to the United States again from November 8th if they are fully vaccinated or have recovered. There are important things to consider.

For a year and a half, contact with friends, relatives and business partners in the United States was mostly only possible via phone, WhatsApp and Zoom. But the Travel Ban, the entry ban for Europeans imposed by ex-President Donald Trump due to the pandemic, was lifted by his successor Joe Biden on November 8 at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

His “Proclamation to Promote the Safe Resumption of Global Travel During the COVID-19 Pandemic” heralds a normalization of relations. People from Brazil, China, India, Iran, Ireland, the Schengen area, South Africa and the United Kingdom will then be allowed to fly to the USA again, but on one important condition: all air travelers (no immigrants and no US citizens) to the United States States must either have recovered or be fully vaccinated before boarding a plane bound for the United States.

In addition, a negative Covid-19 test must be presented at check-in, which must not be older than three days. Evidence from both PCR and rapid antigen tests is accepted. Children under two years of age do not need a test.

“This proof should be in paper or digital form and issued by an official body, should include the name of the traveler and the date of birth in addition to the vaccine and the date of any vaccination (s) received,” states the US Embassy website in Berlin. Accordingly, the evidence on the smartphone (apps with QR codes) or digital downloads of issued certificates are recognized. Those who have recovered have to present a notification that they have survived the corona infection in the past 90 days.

Entry into the US for vaccinated people – these vaccines are allowed

At first it was unclear which vaccines would be accepted. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these are vaccines from the following companies: Biontech / Pfizer, Moderna, Astrazeneca, Covishield, BIBP / Sinopharm, Sinovac and Johnson & Johnson. A “mix-and-match combination”, a cross-vaccination from the specified vaccines is also permitted. The last injection must have been given at least 14 days prior to departure.

A quarantine of seven days is mandatory for non-vaccinated children under the age of 18 when traveling with their vaccinated parents. Upon arrival, they would have to be retested. Minors of fully vaccinated parents can be tested up to three days before departure.

If you make your way to the USA, you have to plan longer waiting times at check-in, in front of the security checks and when entering the country compared to pre-Corona times. Especially for flights to and from Frankfurt. “I expect long queues in the terminals, missed planes and delays,” warned Stefan Schulte, the head of the airport operator Fraport, this week.

For November, he expects between 300,000 to 400,000 passengers on the USA flights – instead of 500,000 at regular times. The problem is that take-offs and landings are concentrated in a few hours a day and there is a lack of employees in the ground handling services.

Travelers to the USA should also know that the country between the east and west coasts continues to be classified as a corona high-risk area by the Robert Koch Institute. “The USA is severely affected by Covid-19,” says the travel and safety information pages. There is even a “Covid-19-related travel warning” for the USA.

In addition to the corona test and proof of a complete vaccination, a third formal requirement must not be forgotten to fill out and apply for the “Electronic System for Travel Authorization” (ESTA) before leaving for the United States. You can find out more about this in the articles below.
