USA, China and the climate: When two great powers save the planet

The United States and China have been fighting climate change together for years. Political tensions have prevented the project so far. Now the great powers want to try again. Will it work this time?

US climate commissioner John Kerry was in Beijing for four days. He shook hands, held talks, met with his counterpart, top politicians and diplomats. It is the first official meeting between American and Chinese climate officials since China unilaterally canceled the climate deal with the United States a year ago. Kerry should revive cooperation and remind Chinese leaders of the “common enemy” of climate change. This could also reduce the political tensions between the two countries and push China to stricter climate protection goals – the USA hoped.
