It seemed as if the pull of wild partisan politics was too strong, as if the US Supreme Court was being drawn ever deeper into the Kulturkampf. When the Supreme Court last year overturned a 50-year-old court practice and denied the right to abortion, liberals feared a dam burst: they now believed the conservative majority on the court, a work of Donald Trump, to be capable of anything. Fears increased when two of the most conservative judges were suspected of being for sale: Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito had not disclosed invitations from entrepreneurs to luxury trips.
