US Supreme Court deals with Trump’s election exclusion

As of: January 6, 2024 5:19 a.m

The US Supreme Court will consider ex-President Trump’s exclusion from the Colorado primaries. On the eve of the anniversary of the attack on the Capitol, incumbent Biden sharply attacked his predecessor.

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear former President Donald Trump’s challenge to his exclusion from the Colorado primary. This was announced by the Supreme Court.

At issue is the December 19 Colorado Supreme Court ruling that barred Trump from the Republican primary in the state.

The court considered it proven that Trump was guilty of an insurrection against the USA in connection with the storming of the Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021. It invoked Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution.

It is unclear how the court will decide

The Supreme Court justices made their decision in an unusually short time. Trump, his party’s leading candidate for the nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the November election, submitted his objection on Wednesday. The Colorado Republican Party also filed an appeal on December 27th.

How the Supreme Court might decide is unclear. The court is dominated by a conservative majority; three of the nine justices were appointed by Trump. In particular, it is unclear whether they are even addressing the question of whether Trump is guilty of insurrection. For example, the court could only decide that Section 3 does not apply to the President. Excluding Trump from the election would be tantamount to a political earthquake.

“Dagger at the throat of democracy”: Biden warns against Trump

On the third anniversary of the storming of the US Capitol, US President Joe Biden warned against a renewed presidency of the Republican Trump. “This is the first national election since the January 6 insurrection, when a dagger was put at the throat of American democracy,” the Democrat said at a campaign rally in the US state of Pennsylvania. “As we begin this election year, we must be clear that voting is about democracy.”

Biden also accused Trump of using rhetoric from Nazi Germany. “He is willing to sacrifice our democracy to gain power,” said the 81-year-old Democrat. Trump spoke about poisoning the blood of Americans and repeated “the exact same language that was used in Nazi Germany.”
