Five tech bosses in the US Senate have to accept the accusation that social media can be deadly. It’s not the first high-profile hearing of this kind – but the companies probably don’t have to fear any consequences this time either.

He had compared two photos of fellow students on a website and the whole of Harvard could vote on which one looked more attractive. The university shut down the site within hours, and Zuckerberg was only able to avert expulsion with an apology. A few weeks later he put Facebook online. That was 20 years ago, and since then he has constantly had to ask for forgiveness for the excesses of his social network, especially due to a lack of data protection.
