Former US President Donald Trump struck an unusually mild tone after his victory in the primary election for the Republican presidential nomination again in the US state of Iowa. In his speech he said: “We want to come together, whether we are Republicans or Democrats, liberals or conservatives.”
In doing so, Trump is sending a clear message, says Boris Vormann, professor of political science at Bard College Berlin: that his candidacy is now inevitable. He probably also wanted to reassure those who were unsettled by his previously very radical tones.
“Trump seems to have the party under control”
Two other candidates, Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, are still in the race for the Republican nomination. But the longer three candidates stay in the race, the more likely it is that the race will end in Trump’s favor, said Vormann.
In addition, two-thirds of voters in Iowa said they believed that Joe Biden became president unfairly and that there was fraud. The party itself also seems to have Trump under control. He therefore assumes that Trump will actually be the Republican candidate, says Vormann.
“National election polls distorted”
The outcome of the presidential election itself cannot yet be predicted, explains Vormann. The national polls are relatively distorted due to the special electoral system.
They showed an approximate mood measurement, and it looked very balanced. “But it doesn’t say very much about the outcome of the election later,” said Vormann. “It is also the case that the primaries tend to favor radical positions.”

Nevertheless, we have to prepare for another Trump presidency, advises Vormann. Because this means a further departure from the global economic system.
It also means “that NATO may not be able to survive or will very likely be undermined. And then we clearly have to ask ourselves questions in Europe about how we want to defend ourselves, militarily.” The public discourse on the problem has now emerged. But this question of real politics was ignored for a long time, says Vormann. “And we now have to approach this in a European way.”
